Hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," is the practice of injecting millions of gallons of liquid (usually a mixture of water, sand, and highly toxic carcinogenic chemicals) into the ground at high pressures to fracture the rock and force out natural gas.
Illinois People's Action believes that Fracking is inherently unsafe and that no amount of regulation can eliminate the serious risks and costs that accompany the practice. Risks include: Contamination leading to damage to public health, massive consumption and destruction of our scarce water resources, destruction of natural resources and ecosystems, escalation of climate change, etc. These risks and costs would persist for decades long after the industy has left the state.
Illinois residents are being subjected to a massive experiment with potentially disastrous consequences, all for the sake of profits for the Oil and Gas industry.
That's why WE are working toward a Frack-Free Illinois Will you join us?
